Welcome to the Asian Image Project. These web pages contain a collection of old and new photographs which illustrate many interesting elements of Asian culture. A few images are presented aesthetically throughout the site, while the entire collection rests in a searchable database.

The initial idea for this collection came from the discovery of a large group of photographs taken by my grandfather, Lawrence Mead, who lived and worked in China from 1912 to 1938. These images have been joined by more current photos taken by my daughter and me during trips to China during the summer of 1999, sponsored by the University of Vermont Asian Studies Outreach Programs. My hope is that this collection will continue to grow to include many more images --- other locations, cultural elements, other photographers.

Most of all, I hope these images will encourage interest in and better understanding of these Asian cultures --- what we share and how we are different.
